Bohemia. (Czech Rep) 1613- 1619. By Gerard Mercator
Published in ‘Atlas Sive Cosmographia ‘, Amsterdam.
Mercator is most famous for his world map based on projections that revolutionized map making, on how a three dimensional globe can be accurately navigated using a two dimensional map. He was meticulous in his work. Maps are of high accuracy for the time and high quality. He inspired Ortelius to publish his work which is now considered the worlds first true atlas, however Mercator book of maps was the first to use the term ‘Atlas’.
First made by Mercator in 1585, this example was published posthumously by his heirs.
