Italian Lombardy area map of Cremona region. 1579-1612 by Abraham Ortelius
Published in the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. The monumental work that’s considered the worlds first true modern atlas. Published starting 1570. Antwerp. This map shows the area centering on the town of Cremona and the Padus River. The map shows the violin producing region where the greatest violin makers and best violins ever made come from. Names such as Amati, Bergonzi, Guarneri, and the most well known name today Stradivarius. Many active and producing the violins at this time. A large insert shows the commune and town of Crema. Two beautiful cartouches are on either side. One shows a soldier holding a long caduceus. The other side a nude art work similar to the one by Cranach of the Virgin. A nice title cartouche below decorated with horned mythological creatures and fruits. Below that a Italian military miles scale. Original hand color and copperplate engraved. Size. 20 1/2 x 15”.
Condition is good. Some minor wear on outer margins.
