RARE map of Cairo, Egypt. With Sphinx and pyramids. c1600 by Matteo Florimi
Several aspects makes this map rare, first is the fact that this map is not by Braun and Hogenberg published in Cologne but a rival who copied their style and made his own publishing where he wouldn’t face legal consequences in Siena, Italy from c1600.
Altering some aspects such as script on top, the lower caption being centered and larger, and figures being different, most aspects remain the same as the more common Braun and Hogenberg example. The view is taken from the same position, with the Nile below and the pyramids and Sphinx on the right. The publication quantities of Florimi’s book must be very limited compared to his rivals who he’s copying. So far fewer examples of this map survive compared to the B & H example. An another aspect to this maps rarity is the original coloring. As we have seen no other colored examples of this map for sale available now. This point can not be overstated. A large caption on the bottom running almost the length of the map, names principle locations, decorated by costumed local men and women, some on horseback. The city is showed with walled fortifications. Hand colored copper plate engraved.
