View of Port St. Julian, river and True Justice island, Patagonia, Argentina, Anson’s squadron was able to stock up on fresh water and salt, hence the importance of showing this area in such detail. St. Julian was an important stopping point before sailing south towards the Straight’s of Magellan.
One of the greatest first-hand accounts of around-the-world voyages, adventure, and piracy from the age of exploration.
By the English pirate (Baron) George Anson. “A Voyage Round the World”.
This edition was published in London in 1756. His mission was to attack Spanish territories in western South America and engage and loot Spanish treasure galleons. If caught the Spanish would have convicted him of piracy and executed him and his crew. A risky and difficult undertaking in which he lost more than two-thirds of his crew and three of his eight ships, the squadron set sail in 1740, returning in 1744, on his flagship ‘the Centurion’ with just 125 men completing a circumnavigation of the globe.
His determined efforts finally saw success when he captured the larger and better-armed Spanish treasure galleon ‘Nuestra Seniora de Cobadonga’, in 1743 off Cape Espiritu Santo, Samar island, Philippines. He was promoted to Lord of the British Crown and was one of the top English commanders during the Seven Years’ War.
